L.B.A.R.A. News May 9, 2008 Project update and Club Challenge plans
Hi Folks,
It’s certainly been awhile since I’ve published an update but things have been moving in slow motion. We have been unable to do any material deployment in a year due to problems with the NCDMF Vessel West Bay. She spent several months in the shipyard under going some major deck repairs plus a host of other ailments. Unfortunately this is the only vessel the NCDMF has for all duties through out the entire coastal area.
Once the West Bay was repaired the groups were way behind in shellfish work and other duties not pertaining to artificial reef work. Unfortunately the reef program is towards the low end of the Totem Pole!
The current plans are for the West Bay to be available to the reef group sometime in July. The first order of business will buoy maintenance on all NC reef sites. Where the vessel goes first will be weather dependent.
Once the vessel does get to our area we have accumulated approximately four million pounds of assorted concrete pipe for deployment. This material is currently slated for AR 445, Dale McDowell Reef and AR 455 Dale Ward Reef. If the stars line up perfectly we will be able to bring in more material from the concrete plants and deploy probably to AR 420 McGlammery Reef.
Club Challenge
This year’s challenge is certainly that. Each year it seems to get tougher to arrange dates to avoid conflict with other scheduled events our anglers like to participate in.
This years plans are to have Captain’s Meeting and registration on Friday September 5th with fishing and awards on Saturday September 6th. This is different from first announced and I apologize for any problems this may have caused.
We plan to have split registrations and Captain’s meetings. We will have one at Holden Beach Marina and one at the VFW on Oak Island. The Oak Island meeting will be in conjunction with the Oak Island Fishing Club meeting. We feel this will work well since our rules haven’t change in many years and you may attend either one. This should save time and gas for some of our competitors. The awards, cookout and door prize party will be at the VFW Oak Island Saturday night. We will send out a detailed schedule at a later date.
Once again we will work with the South Brunswick High School Aquaculture group and attempt to bring in flounder alive.
One idea we have been discussing and would like a lot of feedback on is making the king mackerel division a slot limit size. For an example 30” to 40” some feel this will help save our breed stock.
Other Events
Once again LBARA has been selected as the 501(c) (3) organization to be the recipient of fish caught at several King Mackerel Tournaments this year. Please support these events if possible.
